Hamburgs Fähren

In Hamburg, there are ferry companies that offer tours on the Elbe river (like the ones in this photograph). What these companies will never tell you is that you don’t actually have to pay for a ferry tour to see these sights. Instead, you could simply take the HADAG ferry line 62 to see pretty much the same things. If you’ve never visited a port city before, I recommend adding this to your to-do list if you’re ever in Hamburg.

Since the line is part of the city’s public transportation network, a HVV day ticket will also be valid. This is what I was taking when I made this photo. If you go in the middle of the day or during some odd hour, line 62 will be pleasantly empty and you’ll get to pick a good seat on the upper deck. Make sure to bring a jacket or jumper, though, because it gets chilly very quickly!
